Michael Bagraim | Consultant – BA LLB

Michael Bagraim is a graduate of Rhodes University where he earned his BA in Political Science and his LLB. He was admitted as an advocate in 1982 and as an attorney in 1986. He found his passion within the field of Labour Law and has been practising in that area exclusively since 1986. In this capacity he has become an acknowledged leader in this precarious field of the law. He has been the litigant on numerous ground-breaking legal disputes and lectures at various institutions on Workplace Management and Labour Legislation.

Michael opened Michael Bagraim & Associates in (date) as a niche group of attorneys offering specialist services in the field of Labour Law. As such, he has built up an impressive clientele and a reputation for being the ‘go to’ man on issues pertaining to Labour Law. He is the official legal advisor for the Trade Union Directory and is a former member of the Department of Trade and Industry Task Team that was responsible for assessing labour legislation and the development thereof.

He currently advises nationwide corporations on the restructuring and management of their labour forces.



Neels van Rooyen | Partner – BA LLB

Neels graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BA LLB in 1982. He was admitted as an attorney in 1986 and has been practising as such ever since. During this time Neels has gained invaluable experience in a wide range of aspects of Civil Law, including High Court and Magistrate Court Litigation, MVA and other personal injury claims, Ante Nuptial Agreements, Matrimonial Litigation, drafting and advising on wills, Deceased Estates and general Commercial and Criminal Law.Neels started with Bagraims on 1 August 2002 as a senior legal practitioner. He is responsible for Civil and Commercial Litigation Department and also does Labour Law.



Nicola Arendse | Partner LLB

Nicola matriculated at South Peninsula High School in Diep River during 2001 and obtained her LLB at UWC in 2006.She commenced her Articles of Clerkship with the Legal Aid Board in 2007 and served 10 months as a Public Defender in the George Magisterial District. In October 2007 she joined the Bagraims team after ceding her contract of Articles from the Legal Aid Board. Nicola was admitted as an Attorney in February 2010.

Nicola practices in the fields of civil litigation and criminal law in the Magistrates Courts, as well as labour law litigation at forums such as the CCMA, Bargaining Clouncil and the Labour Court; advising clients on all aspects of labour law, drafting contracts and related documents and chairing Disciplinary Hearings. She also holds the title as an Official of the Small Business Employer’s Organisation with the Department of Labour.



Brandon Schiff | Partner LLB

Brandon matriculated from Herzlia High School in 2001 and thereafter attended the University Of Cape Town (UCT) to study the Four Year Undergraduate Programme in Law. During his university career, Brandon was actively involved in various student organisations including being the Chairman of the South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS UCT), the Treasurer of the Law Students Council and student representative on the Law Faculty Board.

He graduated from the School for Legal Practice in 2007 and thereafter completed his articles at Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes. Brandon was admitted as an attorney in 2008. In 2009, Brandon graduated from the University of the Free State with a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning.

He is currently one of the Labour Law Attorneys at Bagraims Attorneys.



Greg Duncan | Associate

Greg was born in Kensington, Cape Town in 1960 and Matriculated at Heathfield High School during 1978. Greg is a graduate of UWC from which he obtained the Diploma Iuris, the B Proc degree and his LLB.Greg was a public prosecutor before being admitted as an attorney, and along the way he ran his own practice, served as a magistrate in Cape Town and also as Director for Traffic Management in the Western Cape at the Department of Community Safety. Since 2005 Greg has been part-time Commissioner at the CCMA.

Greg joined the team at Bagraims from 1 May 2007 and his practice focuses on labour law as well as civil and criminal litigation.



Harold Bloch

Harry matriculated from Chrisian’s Brothers’ College, Green Point and subsequently took up a career in Human Resources after completing a B Arts degree at UCT.He opened a successful industrial relations consultancy in 1993 and at the same time began to study law, successively completing B Iuris, B Proc and LLB degrees through UNISA while running the consultancy. Harry successfully completed the School for Legal Practice at UCT in 2003, coming first in his class in a number of subjects and went on to pass the Attorney’s Examination of the Cape Law Society in 2004. Harry Bloch was admitted as an attorney in 2005




Amy Stein | Associate BA LLB

Amy matriculated from Herzlia High School in 2003 where after she spent a year living and studying in France as a Rotary International Youth Exchange student. Thereafter she obtained her BA and LLB from the University of Cape Town (UCT). Whilst at UCT Amy was actively involved in various student organisations including the South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS), which she chaired between 2007 and 2008, the Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO), and Rotary. During this time Amy served on the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) as a SAUJS representative as well as the SAJBD outreach sub-committee. As a student she volunteered as a French/English translator at the Rape Crisis Centre and Refugee Clinic.

She graduated from the School for Legal Practice in 2010 and thereafter commenced her articles of clerkship with Bagraims Attorneys.

Amy was admitted as an attorney in February 2012. She practices in the field of Labour Law, with a special interest in settlement negotiations, drafting of contracts, chairing of disciplinary hearings, CCMA and Labour Court processes.



Shafika Fakier | Personal Assistant / Junior Bookkeeper

Sharifa joined the Bagraims team in 1995 and took up the position of receptionist. Her duties expanded to include general secretarial work and in 2001 she completed an intensive Labour Law Course at the University of the Western Cape, which allowed her to assist the attorneys with the preparation of court documents as well as being able to advise clients herself.She currently hold the position of PA/Secretary and her attention to detail and pride in her work has made her an indispensable part of the Bagraim legal family. In 2005 she obtained her paralegal diploma from Intec College and has also completed a course in Pastel in 2006. Sharifa has now also been appointed as a Junior bookkeeper for Bagraims.



Umelda Elisma Antonie | Receptionist and Administration co-ordinator

Before moving into the legal fraternity, Umelda’s first love was nursing, where she worked first at the ACVV Zonnebloem Old Age Home and thereafter as a private nurse at Floreal Guest House. It was in 2000 that Umelda joined Bagraims as a Filing Clerk, whereafter she completed a Receptionist Skills Course.She currently holds the position of Receptionist and Administration Co-ordinator. She is also Bagraim’s First Aider. Umelda has enjoyed the growth she has achieved at Bagraims and hopes to move forward with the firm firmly behind her.
